Thirteen newly promoted Department of Corrections staff have been praised for their skill and dedication to making the island safer.

The officers were applauded by Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, during a ceremony at Westgate Correctional Facility.

Describing the officers as “role models for the next generation of corrections officers”, Mr Weeks said: “It is up to you to set the standard for professionalism, integrity and compassion.

“As you assume your new roles, I encourage you to embrace the challenges that lie ahead.

“The road ahead may be long and challenging at times, but you have shown that you have the skills and determination to succeed. You are part of a team, and together we can continue to make Bermuda a safer and more just society.

“You are not alone. You have the support of your fellow officers, your families and the entire community behind you and, of course, your government.”

Addressing the officers and guests at the ceremony, Keeva-mae Joell-Benjamin, the Commissioner of Corrections, said that the department was going through a period of change.

She said: “Not only is this an exciting time, but it is also a time of change as several senior management team members will be retiring within the next 18 months.

“I challenge the newly promoted officers to embrace change. We have seen promotions in all ranks — from Divisional Officer to Assistant Commissioner.

“Our newly promoted officers will play a key role in carrying out our department’s mission and be actively involved in empowering inmates to be responsible and productive citizens.”

The Department of Corrections will continue its latest recruitment drive for new officers in the coming weeks.
