The Kiwanis Club of St George’s is holding an event to celebrate its 35th anniversary and to recognise its new leadership team.

The club is the local arm of Kiwanis International, an organisation aimed at “serving the children of the world”.

The celebration will be held today at The White Horse Tavern in St George, where the club was founded.

A spokesman for the club said: “For some members of the Kiwanis Club of St George’s it will be a case of déjà vu — the club will hold its installation dinner on Thursday at The White Horse Tavern.

“It will actually be a double celebration as the club this year celebrates its 35th anniversary. It was in 1988 that several residents and business operators in St George’s held a series of meetings in one of the rooms at The White Horse Tavern looking into the possibility and desire to form a Kiwanis Club.

“Inspired by the Kiwanis’ main thrust of ‘serving the children of the world’, the group reached its objective and the Kiwanis Club of St George’s was officially formed.

“The new club made Kiwanis history from Day 1 as it was the first club in Bermuda to have lady members — prior to that Kiwanian membership was restricted to men.”

The four still active charter members of the club — Fanny Churm, Gary Kent-Smith, Harold Millett and Lily Oatley — will be recognised during the dinner.

The incoming officers and directors for the 2023-24 year are: Keina Rollins, president; Scarlett Pottinger, secretary; Vincent John, treasurer; David Burgess, director; Terry Lynn Lewis, director; Altama Burgess, director; Peri Trott, director; and Craig Outerbridge, director.

They took office on October 1.
