Wet weather failed to deter hundreds of people from taking to the streets of Hamilton yesterday to raise money to battle against breast cancer.

Walkers set out for the BF&M Breast Cancer Awareness Walk at about 6pm, most wearing bright yellow shirts with the words “Feel for lumps, Save your bumps” as part of the 27th edition of the annual fundraiser.

Lynn Woolridge, the chief executive of the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, said: “We are here to raise funds, pure and simple, for our Equal Access Fund that helps people who are either underinsured or uninsured to receive care.

“Everyone should have access to healthcare, and this is one way we can make it happen.”

While overcast skies and light rain covered Barr’s Bay Park before the start of the walk, Ms Woolridge said she was happy to see that the weather was not enough to discourage walkers.

“On Monday, I heard that there were just over 1,700 registrants and just now I was told that the number was up to 1,900,” she said. “I think that is very good. Everyone is dedicated and they will have a good time.

“We all remember why we are here and we are going to have fun while we do it.”

Ms Woolridge added that the event was also useful to raise awareness of breast cancer in the community.

“When you see the swarms of people walking through the streets of Hamilton in these gorgeous lemon-yellow shirts, you will know why people are doing what they are doing,” she said.

Organisers had said they hoped that this year’s walk would raise more than $200,000 for Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s Equal Access Fund, along with the charity’s prevention and early detection programmes.
