Rain keeps Brenda’s garden growing

Water truckers may be low on business because of the island’s unusual levels of rain — but a backyard garden that started the year with a giant eggplant keeps on flourishing.

Brenda Warren, from Devon Spring Road in Devonshire, marked the first day of spring yesterday surveying a bumper crop, including more eggplants than she knows what to do with.

“There’s so many I might have to give some to my girl friends,” the 79-year-old said.

A small plot of vegetables teems with broccoli, cauliflower, kale, beets, onions, lettuces and peppers, among others.

A little more than a year on from the commencement of the integrated agriculture strategy, Ms Warren’s home-grown food security shows the productivity of yard farming.

“The rain made it,” she said — with a dash of Miracle-Gro.
