Hundreds without power amid inclement weather

Hundreds of Belco customers were without power this afternoon as inclement weather conditions affected the island.

According to the Belco outage map, 914 customers had lost electricity as of just before 5pm, with the majority — 888 — in St George’s.

In Sandys, 16 customers were affected while ten in Smith’s were without power.

Belco earlier encouraged customers to unplug sensitive electronics and devices such as TVs, computers, gaming systems and appliances owing to the “unpredictable weather conditions”.

The utility company urged residents to be “weather aware” and report outages via 955 if needed.

The Bermuda Weather Service said in its 4.30pm forecast that inclement weather was expected to continue occasionally overnight.

A low pressure passing to the north of Bermuda was driving a cold front over the island with heavy showers, nearby thunderstorms and strong, gusty winds that linger through early tomorrow, a forecaster added.
