Proposal submitted for new housing on Cochrane Road

Plans for new housing in Sandys have been put forward as the Government continues to push to address housing challenges on the island.

The planning application, submitted this month, proposes the creation of three-storey residential buildings on Cochrane Road.

The “Victoria Place II Village” would include a combination of 12 two-bedroom units and 24 three-bedroom units as well as parking for 53 cars and 60 bikes, a playground and a communal waste facility.

The design of the buildings appears to match those proposed to be erected at the nearby former Albert Row site on Malabar Road and on Tommy Fox Road in St David’s.

The Government said in February that it hoped to bring between 950 and 1,350 housing units online by 2035.

As part of the first phase of the project, Mr DeSilva said more than 200 planned homes would be created at five sites including Victoria Place and Albert Row, Tommy Fox Road and Channel House in St David’s, and Dr Cann Park in Southampton.

These units would be reserved for families on the BHC waiting list, as well as seniors on fixed incomes, single-parent households, young people looking for their own spaces and those dealing with homelessness.

Mr DeSilva this week announced a $64 million loan to the Bermuda Land Management Corporation from Bermuda Commercial Bank to support the efforts to bolster housing.

The capital is expected to deliver 84 homes spread throughout three of the sites earmarked for development.

“With construction anticipated to kick off this August, this project will actively engage our local contractors and service providers to drive site preparation, foundations and interior fit-outs,” the housing minister added.

He described a government-guaranteed loan comprising two segments, one with a 6 per cent interest rate and the other at 6.25 per cent.
