Boaters were taken to hospital with serious injuries this afternoon after a two-vessel crash in Hamilton Harbour.

Police said officers and other first responders were called to the incident near lower ferry on Harbour Road, Paget, at about 3.45pm.

“The occupants of one of the vessels involved sustained serious injuries and have been transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital,” a Bermuda Police Service spokesman added.

He said that the road was blocked in the area where the incident happened while emergency service crews provided assistance from the land side.

Harbour Radio earlier confirmed that a vessel taking part in a powerboat race this afternoon was one of those involved in the crash.

A spokesman added that the boat collided with a moored vessel, which was unoccupied.

It was understood that two people were on the powerboat — a pilot and a co-pilot.

Traffic was diverted while emergency crews worked at the scene, with westbound traffic on Harbour Road diverted at the junction of Lovers Lane and Harbour Road on to Middle Road.

Eastbound traffic was diverted from Harbour Road along Chapel Road and on to Middle Road.
