The history of the Cup Match holiday and the local West End organisations that helped to shape it will be at the centre of a morning walk this weekend.

Friends of Sandys will lead the Emancipation Cup Match Walkabout to share stories of historic sites, pre-emancipation life and observances throughout the centuries.

The walk will start at Springfield, Somerset, a Bermuda National Trust property, and will look at Cup Match’s early celebrations and its links to sites such as West End Primary School.

The formation of Somerset Cricket Club and the Friendly Society in Somerset, as well as their impact on emancipation celebrations, will also be studied.

The walk will start at 8am on Saturday at Springfield, just north of the MarketPlace on the east side of Somerset Road. Parking will be available at the Warren Simmons Community Field.

Attendees were asked to bring water for the hike, which is expected to take about two hours.

Sunday has been set for a rain date in case of poor weather.
