Police today warned those attending festivities throughout the weekend to make responsible choices as a number of knives were recovered and persons arrested.

A police spokesman said police’s “robust, high visibility presence” will continue at different gatherings this weekend.

Acting Chief Inspector Nidol Barker, who leads the weekend policing plan, added the visibility would maintain one clear objective — “to keep our community safe”.

She said: “We want everyone attending these events to enjoy themselves responsibly and return home safely.

“We ask the public to work with us by making sensible decisions, leaving weapons at home and respecting the law.

“Those who choose to carry knives or engage in criminal behaviour should expect a swift and decisive police response.”

Officers will continue patrols, roadside sobriety checks and conduct stop-and-search operations.

The spokesman emphasised these measures would promote safety by deterring people from carrying offensive weapons, controlled drugs and other prohibited items in public and at events.

He reminded the public that carrying weapons to entertainment venues puts everyone in attendance at unnecessary risk.

Members of the public were encouraged to leave weapons at home and to treat event staff and fellow patrons with respect.

The spokesman also encouraged members of the community to report any suspicious activity or criminal behaviour and to plan a safe way home before an event to avoid drink driving.

He added: “Anyone found in possession of prohibited weapons, involved in criminal activity or antisocial behaviour, should expect to be dealt with swiftly and in accordance with the law.”

Police noted three events set to take place this weekend.

The Bacchanal Run will warm up today at the National Sports Centre’s North Field at 5pm before moving at 7.30pm and ending at Bernard Park in Pembroke.

Meanwhile, a concert featuring Wayne Wonder will take place at Snorkel Park Beach Club in Sandys at 9pm.

The Non-Mariners boating raft-up is expected to take place tomorrow at Mangrove Bay.
