A snow sports group is offering an opportunity for an aspiring skier or snowboarder in Bermuda to take to the slopes in Vermont in the United States in February.

The Bermuda Ski and Snowboard Association — a charity that helps people to experience skiing or snowboarding — said the fully funded Snow Angel bursary will enable the participant to engage in their first snowfall, a chairlift ride and an “exhilarating descent” down a mountain.

The programme was created for Bermudians and permanent resident certificate holders who would love to experience the mountains but would otherwise be unable to afford the considerable cost of a snow sports holiday.

The charity said no previous skiing or snowboarding experience is required and the bursary is designed for a beginner “who is ready to embrace something completely new”.

The participant will be able to step into ski or snowboard boots for the first time, and discover the thrill, beauty and freedom of being on the slopes.

The successful applicant will join the Bermuda snow community at Jay Peak in Vermont February 7 to 12.

The charity said the “means-tested bursary” will cover return travel, airport transfers, accommodation, lift passes, ski or snowboard equipment, group lessons, essential winter clothing and reasonable food and drink costs.

The Bermuda Ski and Snowboard Association grew from the Bermuda Snow Society, which was established in 2023 to connect people in Bermuda through a shared interest in skiing, snowboarding and mountain life.

The association was formally registered in February this year.

To be eligible for the award, applicants must ordinarily be Bermudian or hold a Bermuda PRC.

They should be aged 21 or over by the date of the trip, although applications from those aged 18 to 20 may be considered individually.

The successful applicant must also hold a valid passport, be eligible to travel to the United States and be available for the full trip.

He or she will be expected to participate in lessons and group activities and to share elements of their experience to help inspire future applicants.
