Young leaders met for a special lunch this week to celebrate International Youth Day.

The meeting, organised by the Office of Youth Affairs, invited people aged between 16 and 35 from different backgrounds to join Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors.

It coincided with International Youth Day, an annual observance on August 12 established by the United Nations to celebrate the hard work of young people and recognise what impacts them.

The International Youth Day Luncheon focused on the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” which highlighted the goals and needs that unite young Bermudians.

A ministry spokeswoman said the lunch allowed attendees to speak candidly to Ms Furbert and each other about the state of youth affairs in Bermuda.

She explained: “The open-floor discussion explored the challenges facing young Bermudians, the opportunities available to them and what must be done collectively to create a stronger future.

“Participants challenged ideas, exchanged perspectives and reflected on the importance of ensuring that young people have meaningful opportunities to contribute to conversations that affect their lives.”

The spokeswoman said attendees later showed their appreciation for the opportunity and expressed willingness to attend similar events.
