For more than 25 years, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s SunSmart Programme has helped shape a healthier, safer summer culture for children, families and camp communities.

This year marked a milestone for the scheme, which aims to keep young campers protected while they learn, play and explore outdoors, with the highest number of registered organisations to date.

While several camps were unable to attend training, all 36 camps that completed the full accreditation process achieved a 100 per cent pass rate.

Azuree Williams, a programme manager at BCHC, said: “Skin cancer remains one of the most preventable cancers, and SunSmart accreditation helps programmes meet their duty of care by embedding practical sun protection habits into daily camp routines for both campers and staff.

“Through education, preparation and positive role modelling, campers are encouraged to practise the SunSmart basics: slip on protective clothing, slop on mineral-based SPF 30 sunscreen, slap on a broadbrimmed hat, seek shade, especially between 10am and 4pm, slide on sunglasses and stay hydrated.

“Together, these simple behaviours help build lifelong healthy habits and reduce skin cancer risk across the wider community.”
