An unused lot in St George’s zoned for tourism could be converted into a private parking lot.

A planning application proposed a change of use for 2 South Prison Street from tourist accommodation to a private parking lot ancillary to Griffin’s Restaurant at the St George’s Club.

The project would involve the creation of 32 car spaces, 32 bike spaces and four charging receptacles as well as demolition of deteriorating walls at the site.

A document included in the application, prepared by Onsite Engineering Services Ltd, stated that the sections of wall were “very old” and in poor condition.

It said: “There are signs of displacement of the wall, causing it to lean somewhat towards the road.

“There is considerable cracking in the wall, further compromising its integrity.

“Given the lack of structural integrity of the wall, we recommend that it be demolished as part of the redevelopment of the site.

“This will ensure the safety of users of South Prison Road, as well as on the newly redeveloped site.

“Given the age and condition of the wall, remedial measures are not practical or recommended.”

The project would also involve the construction of a new staircase leading from the corner of the lot to the St George’s Club roundabout and three new accessible spaces outside of the club itself.

A water tank on the site would not be affected by the project.
