Psychologists with decades of experience will help run a local charity’s animal-assisted therapy programme.

The Bermuda Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced that registered psychologist Cherita Rayner and Annisha Peets, a chartered member of the British Psychological Society, have joined the clinical team of the charity’s TheraTails programme.

TheraTails uses animals and mental health professionals to assist people experiencing trauma, anxiety, attachment difficulties and emotional regulation challenges.

Dr Rayner and Dr Peets have more than 20 years of clinical experience and will be joined in TheraTails by Niki-Anna Cox-Rennalls, an SPCA staff member who has a degree in animal, poultry and veterinary science.

April Augustus, SPCA executive director, said: “What I find so special about TheraTails is the connection that can develop between a participant and an animal.

“While our participants are building confidence, trust and emotional skills, our shelter animals are also receiving valuable attention, enrichment and socialisation.

“For animals waiting for a home, those positive experiences with people are incredibly important.”

While health insurance can support the cost of TheraTails, sessions are offered at no cost to participants.
