The island has welcomed a special guest as St Mary the Virgin Anglican Church in Warwick commemorates its 400th anniversary.

The Most Reverend Philip Wright, Archbishop of the Province of the West Indies and Bishop of Belize, is to preach at a church rededication service this Sunday.

Archbishop Wright arrived on Tuesday accompanied by his wife, Carla. They were greeted at LF Wade International Airport by the Right Reverend Nicholas Dill, Anglican Bishop of Bermuda, with the Reverend Carl Williams, priest-in-charge of St Mary’s.

The church leaders were also welcomed to a courtesy visit of the Cabinet Office by David Burt, the Premier.

Archbishop Wright, visiting Bermuda for the first time, told The Royal Gazette: “It’s a great privilege to be invited to be part of such a significant and historic occasion.

“I will be preaching a service marking the anniversary and on Monday and Tuesday I will spend time with the clergy of the diocese — two things I am very much looking forward to.”

He called the island “a lovely place”, adding: “Sometimes we might not want to describe Bermuda as part of the Caribbean, but there is enough here to resonate with my knowledge of the Caribbean as well as things that are uniquely Bermudian.”
