Hardship Fund approved for $150,000 boost
A multi-agency fund designed to assist those in need will receive a $150,000 boost, the House of Assembly heard.
The Hardship Fund, spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, was approved for the boost on Friday after an analysis of its first year’s performance in 2025.
The fund is designed to help those in dire financial straits navigate their financial problems.
Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, said: “This fund delivers practical support when it is needed most.
“Its time-limited support is designed to resolve immediate crises and prevent temporary hardship from becoming a lasting setback.”
The fund gives emergency assistance to those in immediate risk of homelessness or other serious hardship while helping them gain independence.
It combines several charities, such as the Women’s Resource Centre and The Salvation Army, with the Department of Court Services and the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors.
The assistance has included rental support, utility payments, grocery assistance and funeral expenses.
Ms Furbert said a reflection on the fund’s usage in 2025 showed 141 referrals from partner agencies, 116 of which were approved and funded.
She added that, of these, 11 sought help over medical bills, seven required help with young children and 12 needed help before social benefits were approved.
Applicants must offer documentation showing the type and urgency of their needs, as well as the amount needed, what it would go towards and any other support already offered.
Ms Furbert said the work was meant to protect public funds and ensure assistance reached those who urgently needed it.
She added: “While funding cannot be guaranteed, this fair and accountable process ensures that those in greatest need are treated with dignity and given every appropriate consideration.”
