Wall collapse leaves route closed
A collapsed wall has left a popular route from a bus stop to a residential area in Devonshire inaccessible.
Cones and “caution” tape have been put up at the top and bottom of steps along Border Lane South, in between Parsons Road and Friswells Road, after rocks and earth fragments blocked the path. The incident was first reported on TNN yesterday morning.
One nearby resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said he heard a bang at around 11pm on Wednesday night as rocks tumbled to the ground below.
Madeline Rampersad has lived at the bottom of the lane her entire life.
“I didn’t hear it but when I came out I could see the wall had fell down,” she said.
“The [Public Works] people have been here and they have cordoned it off. Thank God nobody got hurt and that nobody was going down the hill at that time.
“This is where everybody walks up and down. This road here, coming off of Parsons Road, brings you to Friswells Road.
“The workmen have been here but they have not been back since Wednesday, so I don’t know what’s going to happen. They will have to send something in to move the rubble. It’s still dangerous.”
Ms Rampersad explained how the structure had been in a precarious position for some time.
She added: “It’s been looking to come down. With all the rain we had, it just softened it all up and it came down.
“There’s still stuff to come down. If you are down there and you look up you can still see big rocks and stuff. If it rains again it’s going to come down.”
It is understood there had previously been cones and tape at the site and rocks would be kicked off to the side as they occasionally fell during inclement weather.
Ownership of the wall remains unclear. The Ministry of Public Works has been contacted for comment.
