A new director has been assigned to the Department of Parks.

Remi Subair, who acted in the post occasionally since 2022, was appointed director on September 1.

Mr Subair will provide strategic leadership and oversight of the department, including management of staff, resources and operations for the island’s parks, beaches, open spaces and recreational facilities.

He comes with more than 20 years of experience in engineering, project management and public service under his belt.

Having joined the Ministry of Works and Engineering in 2004, Mr Subair progressed through a series of technical and management roles before being appointed principal electrical engineer in 2017.

He managed technical teams, government infrastructure projects, contracts and budgets, developing extensive experience in operational management and problem-solving.

A government spokeswoman said Mr Subair acted as Director of Parks on several occasions since 2022, gaining considerable experience in the department’s administration, operational requirements and workforce management.

He played a key role in rebuilding the department’s workforce and led the organisation of the 2023 Annual Exhibition, co-ordinating staff, resources and logistics.

His leadership and contributions were recognised in April 2023 with a Public Service Excellence Award. His exhibition team was also awarded.

Mr Subair holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Western New England University in Massachusetts, and is a professional member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.

He has also completed leadership and management programmes at the Bermuda College.

His professional development includes training in disciplinary and grievance procedures, workplace health and safety and operational management systems.

The spokeswoman said Mr Subair’s combined experience in technical operations, workforce management and departmental leadership provided a foundation for overseeing the department’s responsibilities.
