Feedback sought on conversion of abandoned properties
Public comment has opened on a proposal to reduce the number of abandoned properties on the island.
The Proposed Framework for Derelict and Abandoned Properties explores ways to convert vacant properties into accommodation for Bermudian families.
The consultation document highlights at least 290 uninhabitable units at 218 addresses across Bermuda, though the number may be higher.
It said that beyond reducing the housing supply, vacant properties drive up housing costs, create public health and safety hazards and undermine the quality of neighbourhoods.
Zane DeSilva, the Minister of Housing and Municipalities, said the ministry aims to “explore practical solutions that can help resolve longstanding ownership and estate issues, encourage property rehabilitation and create additional housing opportunities”.
The consultation explores measures including assistance for property owners, support in resolving inheritance and title issues, incentives for voluntary rehabilitation and possible legislative amendments.
It seeks feedback on potential governance arrangements and safeguards to ensure that property rights are respected, with enforcement or acquisition considered only as a last resort.
The public can view and provide feedback on the framework via forum.gov.bm, with consultation open until December 4.
