A bank has warned its customers to check their accounts after claims that clients’ money had gone missing.

HSBC reacted to online comments from people saying cash had been pilfered and that they had registered complaints with the company.

A spokesman said: “We are aware of concerns regarding disputed transactional account activity.

“As per standard practice, the bank continues to review concerns such as these.”

He added: “The island as a whole is seeing an increase in fraud, as noted by the Bermuda Police Service this week.

“We urge people to check their accounts and report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 299-5252 or 299-5959.”

The BPS confirmed that they had received complaints about “unauthorised transactions involving this company, and inquiries are under way”.

A spokesman added: “In general, it is strongly recommended that residents and businesses regularly review their accounts for unusual money transfers and report any concerns to their bank immediately.

“Suspected fraud should also be reported to the police at the earliest opportunity by calling 211 or visiting the BPS online community reporting portal, portal.police.bm.”

Comments online included one person saying they wanted to give everyone “a heads-up” after losing money.

They posted: “Myself along with three other people that I know have woken up to find our HSBC accounts compromised. Thousands have been taken from each of us in $200 increments from a merchant with the name along the lines of ‘Robust’ something. Please check your accounts.”

Another claimed: “It happened to me … 14 transactions from Robust Victor Inc for a total of $2,614 and some change.

“When I called HSBC, a bank rep advised me there were several other customers with charges from this same merchant. It is an online gambling company.”

One person wrote online: “This is happening weekly and it is not normal. The bank needs to do better.”

The BPS along with the Bermuda Bankers Association warned this week that the public have lost more than $10 million this year to online scams.

Acting Detective Superintendent Jason Smith told how seven local businesses had been robbed of more than $1.8 million in the past two weeks.

He also admitted that because much of the fraud emanated from abroad and was rapidly executed, there have been no prosecutions.
