Yushae DeSilva-Andrade marches into quarter-finals at world championships

Yushae Desilva-Andrade in action on day two of Boccia World Championships

Yushae DeSilva-Andrade booked her place in the quarter-finals of the Boccia World Championships with a second successive victory on the final day of the group stages in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A win over the Czech Republic's Katerina Curinova on Thursday guaranteed DeSilva-Andrade a place in the quarter-finals as one of the top-two finishers in her group and she made it through in some style, thrashing her opponent 4-1 after racing into a four-point advantage after three of four ends.

Coach Troy Farnsworth is thrilled with DeSilva-Andrade’s performances and is excited about the later stages of the competition.

“I’m extremely happy that Yushae has made the top eight at the world championships,” Farnsworth said.

“It’s a big deal in a major competition like this to get through to the quarter-finals. She played another great game and there was a lot of pressure on it, she had to win to progress so the fact she was able to win three out of the four ends and maintain her composure and focus to get the victory was very satisfying.”

Making it to the knockout stages is the deepest DeSilva-Andrade has been at these championships and she has not been helped with the draw. After facing the top player in the world in her group, she has been dealt another daunting task as she plays world No.2 Dora Basic on Friday, but there is no hiding her delight.

“I’m happy that I’ve made it to the quarter finals,” DeSilva-Andrade said. “This is the first time at the world championships that I’ve made it this far. It’s a really good feeling to be in the top eight and I just can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. I’m really excited.”

Coach Farnsworth is echoing her feelings and feels the pressure is off.

.“Looking ahead, she has really got nothing to lose.,” he said. “Other teams may not have expected her to make the top eight coming in as she was one of the lower-ranked players. It’s one game at a time and we’ll focus on tomorrow and hopefully get a victory.”
