David Maycock produced a solid display among a formidable international field at the Professional Bowlers Association Starlite Southwest Open in McPherson, Kansas.

The Bermudian finished an impressive 14th among the 80-strong field at the championships held at Starlite Lanes from February 24 to 26.

Maycock’s main objective was to advance beyond the first round and he did that in style.

“My goal was just to make the cut, that is all I kept telling myself,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“I made the first cut and it felt really good. It also showed me I have what it takes to be out here so it was definitely a confidence booster.”

Maycock was among the 24 players to advance from the first qualifying round with 1,653 points and a best game of 255 in the eight- game series.

The 39-year-old gave it his best shot in the second qualifying round with a spot in the matchplay round at stake but was eliminated from the event with a total of 2,880 points, which left him 17 pins shy of the mark.

“I threw the ball well but got a couple of bad pairs,” added Maycock, who rolled a best game of 231 in the six-game series. “My bowling ball just did not see the lane right and I came up 17 pins short of the matchplay round.

“I was disappointed that didn’t get there, but it happens. I'll take the positive things from this tournament and move on.”

Texan Andres Villarreyna won the tournament with Nevada’s Jake Peters and Finland’s Tomas Kayhko taking second and third.

Looking ahead, Maycock hopes to make more appearances in the United States this year to continue his pursuit of a maiden PBA title.

“I will see where else I am able to bowl and come back to the US and try again to look for that professional title,” he said. “I’d like to thank everyone for their support.”
