The 27th Bodhidarma Zenji Ryu Shiai Karate Tournament took place at Whitney Institute on Sunday.

The tournament brought together karate students from every dojo on the island, and they showcased their skills in kata, kobudo, and kumite.

With Sensei Gladwin Roots Phillips, the Shiai Director and Chief Instructor of the Bodhidarma Zenji Ryu Karate Dojo, ensuring the tournament continues to be a staple in Bermuda's karate scene, the event featured a number of impressive performances.

Geraldine Sidders, of Shorikan, was crowned the overall champion and recipient of the Shiai Cup after exhibiting exceptional technique and skill throughout the tournament.

Tony Cabral won the advanced male kumite division, while Khwai Mendoza triumphed in the under-15 male kata division.

Noah and Zion Lowe were standout performers in the under-10 male novice kata division, with the brothers sweeping the division. It was Zion's first competition and he showed great potential, with the siblings’impressive performances met with cheers from the crowd and praise from the judges.

The next big event will be the 2023 Leperq Memorial on June 25, which will feature top karate athletes from all over the island competing for the coveted Paul Lepercq Memorial Cup.
