An equine star named after Dame Flora Duffy and owned by a Bermuda businessman has won on one of horse racing’s biggest stages in England.

Flora Of Bermuda was successful at Glorious Goodwood, one of the summer’s major racing festivals, in the five-furlong British EBF 40th Anniversary Alice Keppel Fillies' Conditions Stakes.

Trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by former champion jockey Oisin Murphy, Flora of Bermuda broke well from the stalls and was always well placed before sprinting clear of her rivals to win by an easy four lengths at odds of 5-1.

The race was held in terrible conditions on the Sussex Downs, with heavy rain turning the ground soft but, much like her human namesake, the juvenile was much too quick for her rivals and is likely to step up in class in the near future.

Simon Scupham, founder of Bermuda Racing, owner of Flora of Bermuda, was delighted with the win.

“What a glorious win for Flora today,” he said.

“The racecourse may have been rain soaked but Flora had her much deserved day in the sun.”

As Scupham said, the win was well deserved given her unlucky run at Royal Ascot last time, when she was first home on her side of the course in the Queen Mary Stakes, but finished only sixth.
