Dara Alizadeh secures spot at second Olympic Games

Dara Alizadeh qualified for Olympics in Brazil

Rower Dara Alizadeh will add his name to the list of Bermudians to compete at multiple Olympic Games after securing his spot in Brazil on Saturday.

Alizadeh, who competed in the single sculls in Tokyo, needed to finish in the top five of the 19 contenders at the World Rowing Americas Regatta in Rio de Janeiro to claim a spot in Paris this summer.

After producing a storming final 150 metres to finish third in his semi-final, Alizadeh was drawn away from the action in lane one in the crucial six-man final, which featured home favourite Lucas Verthein from Brazil and Bruno Cetraro Berriolo of Uruguay, who competed alongside the Bermudian in Tokyo.

The first two home, Verthein (7min 24.52sec) and Berriolo (7:30.60) finished well clear of the remainder with Javier Insfran of Paraguay coming home third in 7:38.22.

That left Alizadeh in a desperate three-way fight for the final two spots and he came home with less than a second to spare over Reidy Cardona Blanco of Cuba after crossing the line in 7:41.37.

The 30-year-old will now hope to improve on his finishing position of eighteenth in Japan when he competes in the single sculls, one of 14 rowing events in Paris.

The regatta is scheduled to take place at Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium, which is about 30 kilometres from the centre of Paris and is one of only three sites in the world along with Sydney and Beijing with the facilities needed to host the Olympic and Paralympic canoe-kayak and rowing events.
