More than 40 elite athletes benefit from government grants
More than 40 elite athletes will further their quest for sporting greatness with money provided by the government.
Minister of Tourism and Transport, Culture and Sport, Owen Darrell, yesterday presented a total of $175,000 to 43 athletes across 15 different sports to support their training and participation in top international competitions.
The leading recipients included track star Caitlyn Bobb, swimmers Jack and Emma Harvey, triathlete Erica Hawley and sailor Sebastian Kempe, who each received $10,000.
“Our elite athletes continue to make Bermuda proud through their dedication, perseverance and outstanding achievements on the international stage,’ Minister Darrell said.
“This sponsorship programme reflects the Government's ongoing commitment to investing in their success and ensuring they have the support needed to compete at the highest level.”
The number of athletes receiving cash awards more than doubled from last year, when 20 athletes were granted a total of $154,500.
The funding is provided through the Government’s Elite Athlete Sponsorship Programme, which is aligned with the Bermuda National Sports Policy.
The initiative supports Goal 2.1 of the policy: to increase Government funding for high performance athletes and teams by 30 per cent. The programme ensures that top-performing athletes are given the financial support they need to excel on the world stage, reflecting the Government’s ongoing commitment to sporting excellence.
