College sports round-up: catch up on Bermudians in action
Football
La Zai Outerbridge recorded an assist as Hobart & William Smith College continued their unbeaten start to the college season.
Outerbridge provided the ball for Quinn Phillips to score Hobart’s opening goal in a 3-0 win over Roger Williams University.
Hobart have a 100 per cent record after winning their first three matches on the road and play their first game at home against and take on Utica University on Wednesday.
Sachiel Ming was given a shoutout by Syracuse University despite his side falling to a 1-0 home defeat against Clemson on Friday.
Ming was described as “leading the way offensively for the Orange, testing the Clemson defence with multiple shot attempts”. The junior has provided two assists and played all five games, with Syracuse now having a 3-2 record heading into their home game against St John’s on Wednesday.
Jace Donawa came on as a substitute as University of North Carolina fought back to salvage a 2-2 draw against California State on Sunday.
UNC have won one and lost one of their opening four games and are next in action at home to Stanford on Friday.
Forward Andrew Armstrong played five minutes for Marshall University in their 3-1 win over Virginia Commonwealth University. The junior has featured in all four of Marshall’s matches this season, with their record now two wins and two losses as they head into a home match against Utah Valley on Friday.
Tre Burgess and Justin Sukdeo both featured for Thomas College in their 1-0 win over Western New England University on Saturday in the first game of their season.
Danni Watson played 81 minutes for West Virginia State University as they lost their Mountain East Conference opener 1-0 to visiting Glenville State University.
Watson forced the GSU goalkeeper into making a fine save in the 31st minute but was unable to prevent her side falling to a second defeat in three games.
Enrique Mendes came on as a substitute for Saint Peter’s University as they lost 1-0 to Brown on Sunday. The sophomore has featured in four matches so far this season, with his team losing just one of their five games.
Sami Carolo, Kydan Browne and Isai Gibbons were all in the Saint Mary’s University squad that lost 1-0 to University Of Prince Edward Island. Saint Mary’s have lost one and drawn one of their opening two games and they next play away at Dalhousie on Friday.
Forward Xahvi DeRoza featured in University of New Hampshire’s 0-0 draw with Boston University. DeRoza has played in all three games this season, providing one assist in the win over St John’s.
Enoch Joseph played for Casper College in a 4-4 draw against Iowa Lakes Community College in the opening game of their season last week.
Khari Sharieff has been one of Howard University’s key players this season and he was heavily involved in his side’s 4-2 defeat to Manhattan University on Sunday. Sharieff has featured in all four matches for his side this season.
Golf
Sophomore Sienna Mosquera was in action for LeHigh University in the Nittany Lion Individual. Mosquera was tied for fifteenth after the first round of the individual event on Monday after shooting 2-over 74
Dylan Muso was the star player for McDaniel College at the Transylvania fall invite in Kentucky at the weekend. Muso finished even par after three rounds at the University Club of Kentucky, which was good enough to finish tied for 22nd of 88 competitors in the individual event. His McDaniel team finished fourteenth of the 17 teams.
Field hockey
Lauren Cardwell warmed up for the varsity season at the University of Toronto by scoring two goals in a preseason tournament featuring University of Waterloo, Western University, University of Toronto alumni and York University.
Cardwell found the net against Toronto’s alumni squad and Western.
