Promising start for golfers

Local golfers Jarryd Dillas, Mark Phillips and Ebonie Burgess all made promising starts to the Island Games event at Port Royal yesterday.Dillas and Phillips ended the opening round of the 72 hole stroke play tournament tied for second in the men’s division while Burgess finished tied for third in the women’s field.Both Dillas and Phillips carded identical rounds of even par 71.Dillas carded four birdies and five bogeys while Phillips had four birdies and as many bogeys at the Southampton layout.Tied for ninth is Bermuda’s Mitchell Campbell at six over par 77. Campbell struggled during the opening round, carding a double bogey at the par five second hole, four bogeys and two birdies on the back nine.Jevon Roberts, the remaining player on Bermuda’s men’s team, fared even worse. The reigning Bermuda Open and Bacardi Par 3 World Championship amateur champ carded a 13 over par 84 that left him tied for 27th. Robert’s round included nine bogeys and two double bogeys at the par four tenth and 14th holes.Aland’s Johan Lindholm led the men’s field by a solitary shot after day one. Lindholm carded a one under par 70 that included three birdies and two bogeys to set the early pace.Burgess topped the local field in the women’s division after 18 holes despite enduring a bogey riddled round.She shot a ten over par 81 that included eight bogeys and a double bogey at the par four fifth hole.Elizabeth Parsons is second among the local women and tied for ninth overall after carding a 13 over par 84 that included eight bogeys, three double bogeys and a sole birdie at the par five, seventh hole.Katrin Burnie is the third highest local player and 13th overall in the women's field. Burnie shot a 17 over par 88 that included eight bogeys, four double bogeys and a birdie at the par three third hole.Further back in the women’s field is Bermuda’s Ann Symonds who managed a 20 over par 91 that left her in 21st. Symonds’ round contained eight double bogeys and four bogeys.Lina Billing (Gotland) led the women’s field after the opening round. Billing fired a six over par 77 that contained two birdies, three double bogeys and two bogeys.
