Defending champion Dillas ‘the man to beat’

Usual suspect: Dillas is expected to be challenged by Phillips at the Bermuda Match Play Championships

Jarryd Dillas and Tariqah Walikraam will both defend their titles at the Bermuda Match Play Championships at the Mid Ocean Club next week.

The tournament starts on Wednesday with the qualifying stroke play round before the match play rounds from Thursday until Saturday.

Gary Venning, a Bermuda Golf Association administrator, admits Dillas will be the man to beat in the men’s competition but expects Mark Phillips to challenge.

Will Haddrell, one of the island’s most talented players, is unavailable because of other commitments.

“There are always a few surprises in match play,” Venning said. “You’re playing against your opponent and it’s very different from stroke play. Psychologically you can defeat them by getting a few holes up and putting pressure on your opponent. It’s a very psychological and strategic game.”

Venning added: “It’s traditionally been a very popular event, although in recent years numbers have not been what they used to be.”
