Camiko Smith and Daniel Augustus endured a day of frustrations during the final round of the Advocates Professional Golf Association Tour Black History Month Classic on Tuesday.

Smith started the day tied for fourth and just two shots off the lead at Indian Canyon Golf Resort in Palm Springs, California, with Augustus tied for tenth four shots further back.

For a brief time at the start of the final round, Smith topped the leaderboard after getting off to a blistering start with birdies on the opening two holes before two bogeys followed by a quadruple bogey at the par-5 sixth hole all but ended his title hopes before the turn.

“I got myself off to a hot start with a long birdie putt on the first and birdie on the second hole, but I hit two bad shots on the sixth that hurt my position on the leaderboard,” he said.

Smith salvaged some pride playing the back nine at one-over par to finish the round at five-over.

“Key thing for me was to reset and fight on, which I was able to do,” Smith said. “I levelled it out a bit from there onwards, but I just could not seem to get the putts to drop in the hole and that’s golf.”

Augustus mirrored Smith in also getting off to a solid start with a bogey-free front nine and he played the sixth better than his compatriot after getting up and down for birdie on the hole where Smith dropped four shots.

But Augustus’s fortunes took a turn for the worse as he carded five bogeys on the back nine either side of two additional birdies to sign off with a two-over 74.

Overnight leader Kevin Hall won the tournament after beating Devaughn Robinson at the first hole in a play-off after the pair completed the 36-hole event at ten-under par (134).
