Some of the biggest names in the sports world including legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and Bo Jackson, the only professional athlete in history to be named an All-Star in both baseball and American football, will fly to the island in April for the inaugural Bermuda Celebrity Golf Invitational.

They will be joined by some of the NFL’s greatest players including Terrell Owens, an all-star wide receiver, Super Bowl winner Warren Sapp and Lawrence Taylor, who is widely regarded as the best defensive player of all time and who has two Super Bowl rings after victories with the New York Giants.

Damar Hamlin, who recently suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch while playing for the Buffalo Bills is also scheduled to be in attendance as will Metta Worldpeace, who was formerly known as Ron Artest and won the NBA championship in 2010 with the LA Lakers.

It is not only the world of sport that is represented with actor Anthony Anderson, best known for his roles in comedy series Black-ish and K-Ville, also competing alongside R&B singer Bosan.

The celebrity golf tournament is scheduled to take place from April 26 to May 1 at Port Royal Golf Course as part of Black Golfers Week, an event aimed to give golfers, athletes, celebrities, and golfing enthusiasts the chance to travel to the island to partake in a weekend of competition, camaraderie, and fellowship to help drive change on a global scale for the local golf community in Bermuda.

A portion of the event proceeds will benefit the Bermuda Sports Pathway programme designed to help emerging athletes remove barriers to entry and advancement in sports through sports tourism initiatives.

"We look forward to our invited celebrity guests showcasing their love of golf while simultaneously indulging in our island's enchanting appeal," said Tracy Berkeley, Bermuda Tourism Authority Interim Chief executive officer.

“Bermuda residents, stakeholders, and tourism partners are encouraged to get involved and support by either sponsoring a table at the Legends Dinner or by joining a panel discussion featuring some of our celebrity guests.”

Chubb will be the chief sponsors of the event and they are delighted to be associated with the tournament.

“Chubb is proud to be the title sponsor of the 2023 Bermuda Celebrity Golf Invitational, an event that reflects our own cultural and workplace commitment to teamwork and inclusion,” said Judy Gonsalves, Division President Chubb Bermuda.

“We are delighted to partner with the BTA not only to bring this inaugural golfing event to our shores, but also to support their broader sports tourism initiatives. We celebrate the event’s focus on driving diversity in sports and providing greater access and advancement opportunities for young athletes through the Bermuda Sports Pathway Programme.”

Hazel Clark, Director of Global Sales and Business Development at BTA is thrilled that the island will be showcased to some of sport’s leading athletes.

“We are honoured to welcome athletes, celebrities, and notable guests donating their time to attend Bermuda’s first-ever Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament,” she said.

“This event is another opportunity for us to celebrate Bermuda’s rich legacy and showcase the power of inclusivity as a unifier in sports.”
