Local duo miss cut at Latin American Amateur Championship

Disappointing display: Jarryd Dillas (File photograph)

Jarryd Dillas and Adam Perry bowed out of the Latin American Amateur Championship in Panama yesterday.

The Bermudian pair were among those failing to make the cut, which saw the top 50 players plus ties progress on to play the remaining 36 holes of the event at Santa Maria Golf Club.

Dillas improved on an opening round 83 the previous day by two shots to finish tied for 99th with Bolivian Jose Luis Vargas and Colombian Juan Velásquez at 24 over.

Tournament debutant Perry also produced his best round of 79, which included his only birdie of the tournament at the par-five 10th hole, to finish 103rd at 27 over.

Dillas started the second round tied for 97th and Perry found himself in last place among the 107-strong field.

Leader Omar Morales has a one shot advantage over the rest of the field at two under at the halfway stage of the tournament.

The Mexican held a share of the lead with compatriot Santiago De la Fuente and Guatemala’s José Arzú of one under heading into the second round.

Morales shot 69 for the second successive round which included four birdies and three bogeys.

However, the tournament remains wide open with nine players all within five shots of the leader heading into the final two rounds at the par-70 Santa Maria Golf Club layout.

There is plenty of stake at the event as the eventual winner receives an invitation to compete in this year’s Masters, as well as an exemption into The 152nd Open at Royal Troon, US Open Championship at Pinehurst No 2, the Amateur Championship, US Amateur Championship and any other United States Golf Association amateur championship they are eligible for.

The runner-up will receive exemption into final qualifying for The Open and final stages of qualifying for the US Open Championship.
