Eric West’s impressive round halted by darkness

Eric West will be keen to pick up where he left off when he resumes his opening round at The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic on Monday.

The Bermudian, one of only two amateurs competing in the Korn Ferry Tour event, was tied for 33rd at one under with five holes remaining when play was suspended due to darkness.

Starting his round on the back nine and among the last groups to tee off at the par-72 Abaco Club on Winding Bay course in Bahamas, West coped well in blustery conditions.

One over at the turn, the 40-year-old dropped three shots on the first two holes coming in after carding an eagle at the par-5 1st and birdieing the next. A double bogey at the par-4 3rd put West back at even par for the third time in his round.

The former Tour de las Americas, Challenge and Canadian Tour player birdied the next hole but was unable to build on his momentum as darkness prevented any further play.

Kyle Westmoreland, who shot six under, has a one-shot advantage over fellow American Chase Seiffert, at the top of the leaderboard with both players completing their rounds earlier in the day.

Six players are tied for third, while American Raj Ghosh, the remaining amateur among the 131-strong field, is tied for 122nd at six over and will also resume his opening round on Monday with five holes left to play.

West is making his debut on the developmental arm of the PGA Tour that boasts professional golfers who have either yet to reach the PGA Tour, or have but failed to secure enough FedEx Cup points required to retain their Tour status.

He has enjoyed considerable success in recent months after making his PGA Tour debut in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and claiming the Johnnie Walker Classic amateur title.
