Oliver and Darina Betschart saved their best for last to finish the North & South Junior Amateur at the world-famous Pinehurst Golf Course in North Carolina on a positive note on Wednesday.

Competing at Pinehurst’s No 6 course, top local amateur Oliver shot even-par 71, his lowest round of the 54-hole tournament.

Lightning then struck twice for the family as sister Darina produced her lowest round of the tournament of five-over 77 competing at Pinehurst’s No 5 course.

Oliver struggled on the front nine, dropping three shots either side of a birdie at the par-5 sixth hole, to make the turn at two-over.

But whatever tweaks he made to his game thereafter worked to perfection as he was flawless the rest of the way.

The 17-year-old carded additional birdies on the 10th and 14th to get it back to even par, where he remained to finish tied for 45th at 11-over 223 in the 90-strong boys division.

Darina was one-over at the turn before carding bogeys at the 11th and 15th and a double at the par-4 17th, which left her tied for 72nd at 29-over 245 in the 90-strong girls division.

Moroccan Alexandre El Khomri blazed a tournament low 66 in the final round to claim the boys title by two shots, while American Taylor Snively shot even-par 72 for the second straight day to clinch girls honours by one shot.

Oliver will now shift his attention to competing in the upcoming North & South Amateur at Pinehurst, while Darina is poised to represent a Bermuda Golf Association select at the Caribbean Amateur Junior Championships at the Playa Doradae Golf Club in the Dominican Republic.

Darina has already savoured success at the Caribbean Golf Association event having won the girls 11-13 honours last year to underline her potential.
