Nick Jones savoured his first win of the year on the Moongate Tour at Belmont Hills Golf Course on Friday.

The Ocean View teaching professional shot an impressive three-under 67 to finish a shot clear of a stellar field.

“I knew Kenny Leseur was going to shoot a low number, so I had to really gear down and try and pull through, and I did today so I am proud of myself,” Jones told The Royal Gazette.

“It feels really good to have won and my game feels good. Belmont’s greens were very nice and the competition was stiff.”

The 36-year-old carded five birdies with the only blemish of an otherwise brilliant round arriving at the par-4 18th, where he made double bogey after losing his ball off the tee.

Apart from his misfortune at 18, Jones’ ball striking was on song as he hit 15 greens in regulation during his stroll around the Warwick golf course.

“Everything was pretty good, it was just that one tee shot on 18 which went left and you can’t go left there. It was just a bad swing,” he said.

Victory was the perfect confidence booster for the experienced player, who is hoping to qualify for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship for the third time this year.

“I am gearing up for the Local Qualifier in August and really practising as hard as I can right now,” Jones said. “Just getting my game as sharp as I can because the competition is stiff and the goal is to get into the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and make that cut.”

No local player has yet to make the cut in the 72-hole PGA Tour event held at Port Royal Golf Course.

Reigning Moongate Tour champion Leseur, the only other player shooting under par at Belmont, produced an equally impressive 68 to finish second. Amateur Will Haddrell and professionals Scott Roy and Damon Smith all came in at two-over 72 to finish tied for third, a farther two shots back of the leader.
