Daniel Augustus went wire-to-wire to win the Johnnie Walker Classic for the second time at Ocean View Golf Course on Sunday.

The Ocean View professional took full advantage of playing in front of the home crowd as he prevailed by a commanding six shots after completing the 36-hole championship at five under.

An opening round 68 on Saturday left Augustus two shots clear of the field. However, the best was yet to come, as he went one better with a bogey-free 67 in the final round to distance himself from the chasing pack.

Augustus was elated and relieved to come away victorious on his home turf.

“It feels like a monkey off my back to win here again,” he told The Royal Gazette. “This is my home golf course, I love it here, I love the people here and to win in front of my home crowd always feels good.”

The 39-year-old was a model of consistency having carded only one bogey for the entire tournament.

“My goal this week was to minimise bogeys and I only had one in 36 holes so I did that,,” said Augustus, whose flawless final round included three birdies.

“I hit the ball really well to the point that I didn’t stress my game out too much.

“I made sure I kept the same game plan, went through my processes and it worked. “This is probably the best ball-striking week I’ve had in a very long time. I feel like my game is going in the right direction, and I am happy about that.”

Finishing second at one over was Augustus’s Ocean View clubmate and fellow professional Nick Jones.

Jones also shot the low round of 67 on Sunday to jump eight places on the leaderboard after starting the final day tied for ninth.

“Daniel played very well and I knew I had to shoot a low score to try and beat him,” he said.

“My putter just left me yesterday [Saturday] but today they were rolling in. I was hunting but just fell a little short.”

Playing in a major tournament on his home turf also meant a lot to Jones.

“Daniel and I have both been up here for a very long time and have been playing here since we were children. This club means a lot to us and we always support this event,” he said.

Mid Ocean Club’s Chaka DeSilva pipped fellow professional Mark Phillips for third on retrogression after the pair signed off at three over.

DeSilva was pleased with his performance and to be in contention after starting the final round two shots adrift of overnight leader Augustus and tied for second with Phillips at even par.

“It’s nice to be back in contention,” DeSilva said.

“I haven’t been playing well over the last two years probably, but I’ve been enjoying some really good play the last two weeks if I can just get rid of a couple of big numbers.

“Today was a good day and Daniel played extremely well and extremely intelligent. He didn’t put himself in any bother, and for that he comes out the victor, and it was a pleasure to watch that.”

Jonathan James won the amateur title by one shot at five over.

“This is my fourth time playing in this tournament and my first time winning it,” said James, who finished sixth overall. “It feels good and I am going to try to do it again next year”

Punching above his weight was tournament debutant Sa-Qui Robinson, the youngest player in the field at 18, who pipped Jarryd Dillas for second on retrogression after the pair finished at six over.

“It was good and feels extra special to beat up my daddy [Sammy Robinson],” said Robinson, who finished an impressive seventh overall.

“I just had to keep my head, stay focused and get the job done. All I could do was try my best, and that’s really what I did.”

Henry Ascento won the senior division by two shots at 13 over, with Ocean View clubmates Christopher Phillips taking second and Kavon Trott third, a farther two shots back.
