Augustus saves best for last at Clutch Pro Tour Championship
Daniel Augustus saved the best for last at the Clutch Pro Tour Championship in Hexham, England today.
The Ocean View professional shot even par in the third and final round, his lowest in the 54-hole tournament, to sign off on a positive note.
Augustus played a solid front nine, rattling in three consecutive birdies to make the turn at two under.
He remained at two under through thirteen holes, but was pegged back with bogeys at the par 4 14th and 18th to finish at even par.
“Today’s round was a whole lot cleaner; I struck it beautifully and putted very well,” Augustus told The Royal Gazette.
“I got off to a really good start, I birdied the first three holes. I did leave a couple of putts on the front nine. But for the most part I’m putting a whole lot better, which makes me happy because for me that’s the key to the game. If you can roll it you can save yourself so many shots and then when you hit it well you are going to have a low score.”
The 39-year-old, who finished 63rd among the 70-strong field at 15 over, made a rocky start to the tournament after shooting 84 in the opening round, which included three double bogeys.
He managed to steady the ship with a respectable 75 in the second round, which included four birdies, and fared even better on the last day of the championship featuring the top 100 players on the Clutch Pro Tour Order of Merit.
“The first round obviously was disappointing, but I do need probably about a week to acclimatise. I was a little bit jet lagged and everything that could go wrong did go wrong,” Augustus said.
“To be honest that round could have been worst, so my short game is in a good place right now.”
Ireland’s Paul McBride won the championship by four shots at eleven under.
