People urged to talk about sexual health

The Department of Health is encouraging the public to talk about sexual health as the Island recognises June as AIDS Awareness Month. In order to help stem the spread of the deadly virus, senior medical officer Cheryl Peek-Ball called for the community to talk about their sexual health with their doctors, partners and children.Around 250 people are living with AIDS or HIV on the Island, with 11 new cases of HIV and six new cases of AIDS reported last year. While there is no cure for the virus, early detection can help prevent the spread of HIV and allows people to better maintain their health. The Health Department will host several activities this month aimed at encouraging the public to discuss their sexual health.Confidential HIV screening and counselling will be available at the Communicable Disease Control Clinic at the Hamilton Health Centre from 8.30am to 3.30pm on June 27.For more information call 278-6442.
