Oncologist from Hawaii joins hospital team
The Bermuda Hospitals Board has appointed a new, full-time oncologist to join the Cancer Care team at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Dr Paul Coty will be the medical lead for cancer services.
He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Medical Oncology and Haematology and will be directly responsible for consulting with cancer patients in Bermuda and overseeing their care.
The new post also entails working with local and overseas healthcare partners and developing cancer services on-Island. Dr Coty will lead the Cancer Care team at KEMH and will report to the Chief of Medicine Dr Keith Chiappa.
Dr Coty joins BHB after eight years working as a Hematologist/Oncologist in Maui, first at Hawaii Kaiser Permanent before moving on for a short periods as a locum at the Pacific Cancer Institute.
He originally moved to Hawaii in 2003 to establish a full-time oncology department. In his role there, he ran the outpatient clinic, the infusion centre and oversaw care at the sole hospital in Maui at the Maui Memorial Medical Centre.
The appointment comes after several years of searching to find a full-time oncologist for KEMH.
Commenting on the appointment, Dr Chiappa said: “I am extremely pleased to welcome Dr Coty to BHB. While we are very grateful for the assistance from our partner hospitals in maintaining cancer services in Bermuda during this recruitment period, we know that the service requires a full time oncologist.”
Trained in New York, Dr Coty completed his internship and residency for Internal Medicine at the North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre, in New York.
He completed his Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at St Vincent’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre. He also has a Masters in the Art of Teaching from SUNY at Cortland in New York. Other credentials include a BSc in Physics from Hobart College, and an Undergraduate Science Degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
Dr Coty said: “I am pleased to be joining the Cancer Care team at BHB and look forward to meeting with patients and helping them through their cancer treatment.
“I took great pride in creating a medical oncology programme in Maui and am looking forward to working with my BHB colleagues, partners, patients and families to ensure a stable and high quality service here in Bermuda.”
