Bermuda marked World Health Day with the Public Health Awards at a ceremony in Camden House.“Everyone in this room is in some way involved in ensuring that our community is healthy,” Health Minister Zane DeSilva told the gathering. “All of you work to make sure our residents can enjoy optimum well being. So to be able to stand here before such a noble and distinguished audience is truly humbling.”This year’s awards recognised the contributions of individuals and organisations toward the well-being of Bermuda’s older population, he said.The Public Health Recognition Award was given to Meals on Wheels, which serves the Island’s seniors with healthy daily meals.Rosheena Masters took the individual Public Health Professional Award as a health practitioner with a lengthy career in long-term care. She helped develop a Government staffed nursing facility, and contributed to developing a “philosophy of care” called the Eden Alternative.The Minister also applauded nominees for the awards.Organisations put forward were the managed care company LTC Solutions Limited; Lefroy House Care Community, and Sandys Community Centre.Individual nominees were EMT driver Donald Astwood of King Edward VII Memorial (KEMH); Department of Health Coordinator of Community nursing Valerie Cheape; Bodyworks aerobics proprietor Sally Darling; pharmacist Karen Leseur of Island Health; Seniors coordinator for the National Office of Seniors and the Physically Challenged Corita Saunders; Maxine Simmons, Clinical Nurse Manager Continuing Care at Lower KEMH, and KEMH Activities Coordinator for Continuing Care Capri Smith.Health Department worker Mellonie Furbert was commended for her work in promoting healthy living.Nominees were health educator Dave Barber, school health promoter Marie Beach, vector control worker Ross Furbert, Lefroy House administrator Rosheena Masters, and administrator Karen Raynor.
