Govt flu vaccine supply runs out

Government supplies of flu vaccine have run dry after an “enormous” public response over the weekend. Two hundred doses of the influenza vaccine were administered from the Hamilton Health Centre on Saturday an additional session brought on by demand.A clinic scheduled to take place tomorrow has been cancelled as supplies have been exhausted, a Health Department spokeswoman said.“The Department of Health is working with the Pan American Health Organisation to source additional vaccine,” she added.“The department is encouraged by the level of participation in this preventive effort as it represents a well-informed community that acts appropriately and responsibly to protect its health against threats.“It should be noted that some physician offices still have limited supplies of flu vaccine in stock. The public is advised to check with their private physician officer to confirm availability of the vaccine.”The spokeswoman said the department will notify the public when more vaccine arrives on the Island.Acting Chief Medical Officer Cheryl Peek-Ball added that when vaccination coverage is high in a community, it offers some protection to those who are not vaccinated by what is known as “herd immunity”.Residents are advised to wash their hands and cover their mouth when coughing to prevent the flu from spreading.
