Reducing Your Risk health talk this month

Ways to cut the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease are to be discussed later this month.

The Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre said that many diseases were preventable if lifestyle changes were made.

Azuree Williams, events and programme manager for BCHC, said: “I will talk about the prevention measures including diet, exercise, screening, sun protection, family health history and reducing tobacco and alcohol consumption.

“We are also planning to have a cardiologist talk about reducing cardiovascular health risk.”

She added: “It is important for people to come to the talk, so that, when they do go for a doctor's visit, they can make informed decisions, in regards to their health. It is about quality of life and making better choices. So many people are diagnosed with cancer, yet up to 49 per cent of cancers are preventable.”

Ms Williams will highlight tobacco and lung cancer and risks from e-cigarettes and vaping.

She added: “Breast cancer is the top cancer for women in Bermuda, prostate cancer is the number one for men. The second most common for both is lung cancer. We do several talks a year as part of our community outreach, making sure we are sharing our information with the public.”

The free Reducing your Risk talk will be held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute on September 19 starting at 5.30pm
