Beach-loving cancer worker accepts quarantine

A staff member at a cancer charity has gone into self-quarantine in the wake of ignoring Covid-19 social-distancing rules for a group photograph on a beach after they were reopened last weekend.

Lynne Woolridge, the chief executive of the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, said that patient safety was vital and that the move was made to protect them.

Ms Woolridge added: “We understand the importance of physical distancing during this Covid-19 emergency and have reiterated that to all employees.

“The action of this member of staff is disappointing; however, the centre has put steps in place to ensure that patient safety is not compromised.

“The Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre can assure patients, and our community, that the centre and employees have not been compromised, as this staff member remains at home for a period of self-quarantine.”

The photograph, posted on social media on Saturday, was one of several incidents condemned by the Government and police after beaches and parks were reopened as part of phase one of a four-step return to normality.

A spokeswoman for the charity said that the centre kept up to date on government guidance and communicated the latest policies to all its staff.

She added: “Through each Covid-19 phase, the centre reviews healthcare guidelines to ensure staff are knowledgeable of changes, equipped and capable of implementing practices needed to avoid contracting and then preventing the spread of Covid-19 within the facility and in their personal lives.

“Policies and procedures are being reviewed and will be improved as necessary to avoid a repeat of this incident.”

Immediate repercussions: this photograph set off a torrent of criticism on the day Bermuda came out of lockdown and was meant to be applying appropriate physical and social-distancing. One of the women pictured, a Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre worker, has been put into self-quarantine
