More than 200 people have now received a second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, giving them almost full protection against the virus.

And the Government is now looking to broaden its vaccination programme to other sections of society following the arrival of 19,500 doses of the vaccine last week.

More than 5,000 residents have now received their first jab, which provides around 50 per cent protection. A second jab boosts protection levels to 95 per cent.

Kim Wilson, the health minister, said last night: “We can now start moving towards phase two of the National Allocation Strategy.

“While we continue to ask those in Priority Group 1(A) or 1(B) to register their interest and be vaccinated, we are also asking those residents in phase two, to register their interest online.”

Priority Group 1 includes people over the age 65, people with serious underlying conditions and essential workers.

Phase two includes people over the age of 50, as well as vulnerable people, such as those with underlying health conditions.

Ms Wilson spoke out following the release of the latest Covid-19 test results.

There were no new cases among the 389 tests received by the Department of Health and the number of active cases remains at 11. Four people remain in hospital, although none are in critical care.

Ms Wilson suggested that, while the vaccine programme is expanding, it was important for those in critical group categories to register.

“Whilst we are pleased with the numbers of persons vaccinated thus far, we must ensure that all persons in the critical groups that are at risk are safely vaccinated,” she said.

“If you know anyone in any of our high-risk target groups who has not registered their interest in getting the vaccine, please encourage or help them to register online at: forms.gov.bm/covidvaccine.
