The island’s main coronavirus testing laboratory has caught up on a backlog of tests, the director said today.

Carika Weldon, in charge of the Molecular Diagnostic and Research Laboratory, said “This is the final update.

“As of 5.30pm on Jan 21, we are back up to date Bermuda.

“Only ten pending from yesterday and we’ve started today’s samples already.

“Thank you for your immense patience during these last three weeks and please stay safe.”

The news was posted by Dr Weldon in a progress report on Twitter.

She signed the post from the “MDL team”.

Dr Weldon said ten days ago that a two-day lag for coronavirus test results at the time was expected to continue.

She added that the situation was like “a revolving door” when positive cases processed at the MDL outstripped small gains in staff numbers.

Dr Weldon highlighted a shortage of staff earlier this month when a spike in workload overwhelmed capacity.

She will step down from her post as science adviser and director of the MDL at the end of this month.
