Confidential asthma registry for students to be updated

Parents have been urged to renew their records for asthma with the health ministry for children aged 4 to 18.

The Bermuda Student Asthma Registry is updated each year as health, school, address, contact details and other information of young people may have changed. The data are strictly confidential.

Open Airways, the charity, estimated last year that as many as half of children with the condition had not been put on the list.

Kim Wilson, the health minister, called on parents and caregivers to provide the “vital” details on health status and school particulars every September.

She added: “Yearly registration also enables our asthma specialists to conduct the most current evaluations of students with asthma."

The registry allows asthma healthcare providers, along with the health and education ministries of Health and Education, to track asthma and ensure support for students.

This list is maintained by the education and health departments with the Bermuda Hospitals Board’s asthma education centre and Open Airways.

Debbie Barboza, the BHB and health department asthma nurse educator, said the relevant health care providers were dedicated to bringing pupils with asthma a safe and successful academic year.

“Highly skilled asthma nurses will review the survey statistics and target their assistance to those most in need,” she said.

Open Airways gives free spacers and offer spacer technique demos at island-wide locations to assist with these efforts.
