The work of a Bermuda-based doctor who played a key role in founding a free men’s health clinic on the island has been recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Jonathan Makanjuola was honoured at the Caribbean Global Awards 2023 on Saturday for his contribution to the Caribbean community and for his “perseverance, resolve and dedication to clinical excellence in the urological, particularly bladder and cancer”.

In particular, Dr Makanjuola was acknowledged in the Best in Health and Social Care Services category specifically for his part in founding the Daily Male Free Men’s Clinic.

The pop-up clinics provided free prostate cancer screening and cardiovascular testing once a month from February to July at various sporting clubs throughout the island, as well as hosting informational forums to discuss the ailments.

He was accompanied on stage at a gala ceremony at the awards ceremony in London by Daily Male cofounder Jade Robinson, an advanced medical student.

In accepting the award, Dr Makanjuola said: “I see myself as a honorary member of the Caribbean. I’m originally from Nigeria, but my lovely wife is in Bermuda and I ‘Brexited’ the UK last year to locate back to Bermuda.

“I’m a urological surgeon and prostate cancer is a big condition of cancer that is killing men across the Caribbean and beyond.

“When I arrived in Bermuda, the rate of prostate cancer was very high and I wanted to do something personally about it.

“So, with my fantastic colleague, who’s here with me, Jade Robinson, we set up the first public prostate cancer screening clinic in Bermuda called The Daily Male. We screened over 200 men and diagnosed ten with prostate cancer.

“And my vision and our plan is to set up the Daily Male across the Caribbean, offering preprostate cancer screening and diagnostics, giving fair and equal access to prostate cancer screening and high-quality treatment for prostate cancer.”

The venture also has a plan for buying a specially fitted vehicle to provide mobile health services throughout the Bermuda.

Ms Robinson also thanked the awards committee for recognising the accomplishments of the clinics and noted the aim of expanding into the Caribbean region.

“I'm feeling very nervous being up here and honoured to be in the room with such amazing people,” said Ms Robinson. “I’m a Caribbean girl from Bermuda and a medical student training to contribute to making change in the world.

“I thank you for the opportunity to sit in the room with you all.”
