The hyperbaric chamber at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s general wing, taken out of use over a burst pipe last week, has been reopened by the Bermuda Hospitals Board for “limited procedures”.

Previously, staffing issues had forced the chamber, used to treat diving-related injuries, soft-tissue infections and other ailments, to close last year in February and August, and from December 11 until January 29.

A BHB spokeswoman said one of the chamber’s two compressors was operating, and certified as safe to offer emergency service for divers, but its use for wound care remained offline.

She warned that it could be “several weeks” before the device was back at full service and certified as safe, and apologised for any inconvenience.
