Health ministry relaxes Ebola screenings

The Ministry of Health is no longer monitoring travellers arriving in Bermuda from Uganda or South Sudan to minimise the chance of Ebola reaching the island.

A ministry spokeswoman said while it ceased screening travellers from these countries on August 28 after “a comprehensive epidemiological review”, it continues to monitor anyone who has been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo within the past three weeks.

The ministry said last month, when it began screening travellers, that doing so aligned “with international best practices and supports early identification of any potential health concerns”.

The spokeswoman said the changes kept Bermuda’s border‑health measures “proportionate to the current international risk” without imposing unnecessary burdens on travellers.

The World Health Organisation declared Ebola virus a public health emergency of international concern in May after outbreaks in Uganda and the DRC.

Shaun Ramroop, the Chief Medical Officer, said today: “While the risk of Ebola transmission to Bermuda remains low, targeted surveillance at ports of entry remains an essential precaution to support early detection and rapid containment.

“Border health officials will continue to conduct entry screening, review travel histories and apply monitoring protocols for individuals who have travelled to the DRC within the past 21 days.”

Ebola is a severe and often fatal disease transmitted through contact with infected person’s blood or bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces.

Early symptoms include fever, muscle aches and fatigue. Later signs can involve vomiting and abdominal pain.

The ministry urged travellers to beware of these symptoms, stay informed of global health updates and take precautions if travelling near affected regions.
