Bermuda Hospitals Board event (Image supplied)

World Stroke Day will be marked on October 29 at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, with free health screenings and key advice on how to respond to signs of a stroke.

The Bermuda Stroke Association will also convene local health organisations for an educational event at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

The Bermuda Hospitals Board screenings will take place in the KEMH main lobby from 10am to 2pm.

Attendees can get blood pressure, blood sugar and weight checks, with results explained in relation to stroke risk.

Representatives from the Bermuda Stroke Association will provide information and support, while allied health professionals, including physiotherapists and occupational therapists from KEMH and Evolution Healing Centre, will answer questions and offer advice on stroke recovery and rehabilitation.

Organisations including the Bermuda Diabetes Association, the Bermuda Heart Foundation, Age Concern and the Department of Health will take part.

Judy Richardson, the BHB’s acting chief executive and chief of nursing, said: “We are seeing an average of four to five people each week presenting to our Emergency Department with a stroke.

“We established our Primary Stroke Centre in 2019 to help address this growing challenge and it is making a difference.

“However, raising awareness remains critical, both in recognising stroke symptoms and managing the major risk factors, including high blood pressure, diabetes and atrial fibrillation.”

Srinath Meadipudi, the director of BHB’s primary stroke centre, said the theme this year, “Every M1nute Counts”, highlights the importance of recognising symptoms and acting quickly.

“When it comes to stroke, time lost is brain lost,” Dr Meadipudi said.

“For every minute a stroke goes untreated, nearly two million brain cells die. The best way to remember the warning signs is to Be Fast.

Warning signs

Balance: Sudden loss of balance or co-ordination

Eyes: Sudden loss of vision or changes in eyesight

Face: Drooping or weakness on one side of the face

Arms: Weakness or numbness in an arm

Speech: Slurred speech or difficulty speaking

Time: Call 911 immediately

“If you notice any of these symptoms, don't wait. Call 911 straight away. Every second counts, and fast action can save lives and reduce disability.”

Doors open for the Bermuda Stroke Association’s event at the BUEI at 5pm, with presentations starting at 6pm including survivor and caregiver stories, along with a panel of healthcare experts. Refreshments will be sponsored by Allshores and Discovery Wine and Spirits.

Age Concern, Vision Bermuda, WindReach, the Bermuda Red Cross, the Bermuda Diabetes Association, Dementia Bermuda, Lighthouse Medical Supplies and Medical House will take part.

The association, which registered as a charity in May 2026, is dedicated to supporting stroke survivors and their families.

A spokeswoman said: “Co-chaired by Keith DeSilva and Nicole Chichon-DeSilva, the association has quickly established itself as a vital resource in the community.”

The association launched a comprehensive website www.stroke.bm providing information, resources and support for those affected by stroke.

It also hosts monthly support groups for survivors and caregivers led by psychologist Sam Scott-O’Bannon, and has created a peer support system for ongoing guidance and encouragement.

In recognition of its work, the association became an official stroke support organisation and a recognised member of the World Stroke Organisation.

The charity will also host its first tag day in Hamilton on October 28.
